Sanral CEO walks away...

Does Nazir Alli's resignation seem innocent???

As most motorist knew, the new e-tolling system was to have started on Monday the 30th of April. To the advantage of the public, the system was put on hold just about a week ago by the North Gauteng High Court. This morning Mail & Guardian reported that the CEO of the South African Roads Agency Limited (Sanral), Nazir Alli has put forth his resignation from the company and it was successfully approved. Sadly just as the public would have suffered financial loss had the system been running already, so will Sanral should the court decide against the e-tolling system. It certainly is not the first or the last time a CEO resigns from their position or company, but what is surprising about this case, is the way that Alli decides to up and leave at such a critical time. iOL news stated that Alli has with no doubt just thrown away the last bit of credibility the public had on Sanral, which is certainly true, as if that was not enough for Sanral to worry about, the National Treasury told the parliamentarins that Sanral will only be able to survive another six months in terms of finances.
Alli's sudden walk raises even more questions from the public about this e-tolling system.

  1. people dnt have enough money to pay for the tariffs of the e-tolling system. it should just be scrapped to accomodate the average consumer.

  2. intriguing for me was Vavi's response that they (Cosatu) welcome his resignation and as he (Nazir Alli) was the most stubborn person who acted as a God with no regard for the interest of the public. That gave me an answer as to why he would resign at such a critical time.

  4. I am happy that he resigned, but who will take his place? How certain can we be that they will not still try and strangle us for our last pennies to "recover the costs" for building the new infrastructure. I don't mind paying a bit of money, but sorry, there has been no transparency and people are withholding information about where millions are actually goin.....surely someone used him to level up his pockets

  5. I believe that Mr Alli is a small fish in a big pond. The e-tolling system would not have gotten to such an advanced stage if Mr Alli did not have government backing. He was doing government's bidding: as the major shareholder in Sanral, government would have the last word. Now that the whole system is in shambles, Mr Alli has been made the sacrificial lamb. The public gets to demonise him and government comes out smelling like roses (not for long I hope). Pure politics.
